Summary Suggestions
Based on feedback from list members, here are the guidelines list members are expected to follow regarding posting summaries to the list.
- The person who originally asked the question has the responsibility of summarizing the answers and sending the entire summary back to the list.
- A summary should include attributions so others can pick up conversations offline if necessary with original posters. However, try not to simply dump all the replies into a mail message and send that to the list -- that is not really a summary!
- When a summary is sent back to the list, it should contain the word "SUMMARY" as the first word of the "Subject" line.
- Please try to briefly restate your original question so that others have some clue as to what it was you asked that generated all those replies!
- All responses to "non-emergency" questions should not be summarized for a period of at least 24 hours from the original post. This will allow members in varying time zones and with different schedules to participate in the discussion. Non-emergency includes all posts asking for product/vendor referrals, long term solutions, and in general - most posts where there can be several different "correct" or "good" solutions.
- Solutions to emergency problems may be posted as soon as the solution is put into place and is WORKING. Emergency problems would include those that have rendered critical networks or machines inoperable.
- No responses to a post should be sent more than five days (24 hour periods) after the time of the original post. If the poster does not feel his/her question has been responded to at that point, they may post again.
- To facilitate this, posters should include the original time (with zone) of their post at the top of their message. Some gateways "hold" mail for indefinite periods, and the time you receive mail may have nothing to do with when it was sent.
