Recommended settings for email software:

The Mac-Mgrs list prohibits, among other things, the use of HTML or MIME formatting in messages and the attachment of VCards to messages posted to the list (see the Mac-Mgrs FAQ for other list rules).

See the Macintosh E-Mail Resource Page or read one of the guides below to learn how to turn off these features in various email packages:

HTML/MIME formatting:

Cyberdog

html: Cyberdog has no provision for sending formatted text as html so this
is not a problem. Fortunately, we can read received html messages though.
They come as attachments. Simply clicking on the attachment's icon in the
message window will display the message in a web window.

MIME: Cyberdog can send messages in MIME format. Cyberdog 'new' message
windows have a popup menu just above the top right corner of the message
body field. To turn MIME off, select 'Plain Text' from this menu. To turn
MIME on, select 'Rich Text'.

tip.
You can create and use multiple message letterheads with Cyberdog. Simply
create a new message and fill in the fields as you wish them to default.
For Mac Managers list messages, you could fill in the From and To fields,
set a default signature and set the text type to 'Plain Text'. When your
letterhead is complete, select "Save as Letterhead..." from the Message
menu. Give the letterhead a name like "Mac Managers Message" and click on
OK.

Cyberdog's Mail & News preferences contain a 'Skip dialog when creating a
new message' checkbox setting in the Letterheads panel. If this is
unchecked, Cyberdog will ask which letterhead to use every time you create
or reply to a message. If checked, Cyberdog will use the default letterhead
(identified by the bullet to the left of the letterhead name). To
temporarily reverse this setting, simply hold the Option key while choosing
New Message or clicking on the Reply button.

Date: Mon, 27 Jul 1998 13:59:42 -0700 From: "K. M. Peterson" KMP@TIAC.NET For Eudora Pro 4, the "Styled Text" pane of the Settings menu controls whether Eudora sends and/or recognizes HTML or "Text/Enriched" email. Those who wish to use formatting to others from time to time should choose the "Ask me each time" option which gives you control over who gets what. For Netscape Communicator, I believe that you can choose various addresses as to whether they are able to receive "HTML" email, and in 4.5 in the Edit->Preferences pane there is an option also to ask when the recipient is not listed as able to receive HTML-formatted mail. Here's the guide: 1. In Eudora Pro 4.0, choose "Settings" from the "Special" menu. 2. You'll have a list of settings on the left of the window. The first setting is "Getting Started", the second is "Hosts", etc. 3. Scroll down this list until you come to "Styled Text". Click once on the words "Styled Text" or the corresponding icon. The rest of the window will change appropriately. 4. Choose the "Send Plain Text Mail Only" radio-button to permanently disable sending HTML mail. Or, if there are correspondents with whom you wish to exchange formatted-text email, make sure that in addition to any other settings you choose that the "Ask me each time" box is checked - and then ensure that you do not allow styled text email to be sent to this list. 1. In Netscape Communicator 4.5, disable HTML-formatted email to specific addresses. To start, create an address card entry for Mac Managers by Choosing "Address Book" from the "Communicator Menu". 2. Click the "New Card" button. Type in "Mac" "Managers" for the first and last names, then the email address "mac-mgrs@lists.mac-mgrs.org" (no quotes). 3. Ensure the "Prefers to receive HTML" box remains unchecked. 4. When sending mail to Mac Managers, ensure that you do not override this behavior when sending email. 5. To turn off HTML formatting permanently, and for all recipients, choose "Preferences" from the "Edit" menu. Click on "Formatting" under "Mail and Newsgroups" (click the triangle next to "Mail and Newsgroups" if there is no "Formatting" item under "Mail and Newsgroups"). 6. Uncheck the "Use HTML editor to compose messages" option, and check "When sending HTML messages to recipients who are not listed as being able to receive them [select] Convert the message into plain text". _KMP --- K. That way, when your message contains styled text of any sort, you will asked by Eudora to confirm that you actually want to send the style information. Date: Wed, 29 Jul 1998 09:54:11 -0700 From: rdelbello rdelbello@daileyads.com In response to you query about disabling HTML and MIME formatting in email clients, here are the directions for a few that I use: Claris Emailer doesn't support HTML or MIME formatted messages and therefore you don't need to disable this function. In Outlook Express you can either press the Preferences button or select "Preferences..." from the "Edit" menu. Select "Message Composition" under the "Outlook Express" category. At the top-left of the options select "Plain Text" as the "Mail Sending Format". In QuickMail Pro the mail formatting is set on an individual address level. Select "Address Books..." from the "Configure" menu. Select the address book that contains the address to be changed. Double-click the address. From the "Message Format" pull-down menu select "Text". Hope this helps. Remo Del Bello
Date: 21 Jun 99 11:23:17 -0700 From: "Barry Fass-Holmes" In QMPro, when you create an address for someone, the dialog for the addressee's name and address includes a popup menu for Message Format. If you select "MIME (plain text)," then the outgoing message won't contain HTML or stylized text.
Subject: Turning Styled Text Off in QuickMail Pro Date: Wed, 23 Jun 1999 09:23:35 -0700 From: Remo Del Bello Chuck, QuickMail Pro is very flexible in this area. It lets you assign text formatting and encoding method options on a per address basis so that, for example, one could turn styled text off for selected addresses and leave it on for others. To do this the user need to access the address options. There are three places to access these options: You can change the options for an address in the address book; you can change the options for an address on-the-fly in an outgoing mail message; you can change the default settings for new addresses. Following are directions for changing the text formatting to plain text in all three places. If you would like screen shot, just let me know. I'll be happy to send them. Address Book Change: >From the "Configure" menu, select "Address Books..." In the dialog box that appears double-click the address book that contains the address to be modified. Next double-click the address to be modified. The next dialog box contains a region titled "Mail Settings for xxx" where xxx is the name of the addressee. From the "Message Format:" pop-up menu select "Text". On-the-fly Change: Click the address area of the mail message. This will bring up a dialog box that allows you to pick addresses from you address books. If an address hasn't been selected yet, select it, move it to the "To:" field and double-click it. If the address isn't in an address book, click the "New..." button in the bottom left corner of the dialog box. The next dialog box contains a region titled "Mail Settings for xxx" where xxx is the name of the addressee. From the "Message Format:" pop-up menu select "Text". Default Settings Change: >From the "Configure" menu, select "New Address Settings..." The next dialog box contains a region titled "Mail Settings". From the "Message Format:" pop-up menu select "Text". I hope this helps. --Remo Del Bello

VCards:

In Netscape 4.5 go to Messenger. (Apple/clover 2, or from the Comunicator
menu)

In the Communicator menu, go to Tools:Manage mail account.
Go to the Identity sub-tab.

Deselect the attach my personal card (as vcard) option.

I believe that is it.

What is odd, is that this is not the default setting, so people are
purposely selecting this feature, which is effective ammunition to
prosecute! ;-)

The box said 'Requires Windows 95, or better.' So I bought a Macintosh.

Date: Thu, 10 Dec 1998 15:12:50 -0500 From: "Mike O'Hanlon" mike_ohanlon@magra.com As one of the transgressors, and a newbie on the list to boot, I might suggest the following steps to turn off the vCard feature of Netscape v4.5 Go to Edit/Preferences/Mail & Newsgroups/Identity Toggle the check-box beside the "Attach my personal card to messages ..." to off Click OK It can be a bit of a pain if you like to have the vCard included with all of your mail. Maybe a script could be written to turn it on and off. Maybe there is a way to do it from the Message window.
1. Open "Preferences" in the Edit menu of Netscape/Communicator 4.5. 2. Click on the triangle next to "Mail & Newsgroups" to open it, if the sub-options are not already visible. 3. Click on "Identity" under "Mail & Newsgroups". 4. Look for "Attach my personal card to messages (as a VCard)". If the selection box next to it is not empty, click on it to deselect that option. 5. Click the "OK" button to save your preferences. David Gutierrez drg@biomath.mdacc.tmc.edu
Under the Edit Menu select Preferences Scroll down to the Mail & Newsgroups Category and select Identity If there is a checkmark in the box labeled Attach my personal card to messages (as a vcard) click on it to remove the checkmark. This will disable VCF cards. Click OK to close the Preferences window. __________________________________________________________ Felipe Campos (felipe@uts.cc.utexas.edu) aka EgOiStE on Internet Relay Chat. Date: Thu, 10 Dec 1998 13:47:01 -0800 From: "Scott Bradley" bradleys@nichols.com Chuck, I'll let you be the judge of whether or not this works rather than post it myself and find out it doesn't. Here's the recipie for shutting off Communicator 4.5's VCards: 1) From Edit Menu Choose Preferences 2) Expand the Mail & Newsgroups section 3) Select the Identity sub-section 4) Uncheck the 2nd check box at the bottom of the window, which reads "Attach my personal card to messageses (as a VCard)" Since I sent this with Comm 4.5, you are the test recipient :-) Hope it worked. If not there may be a bug that causes it to be sent no matter what. As long as I'm at this - Thanks for all your effort running this list! Scott Bradley
From: Paul Bruneau paul_bruneau@special-lite.com Who could resist an opportunity like that! I have attached (hehe) two gifs that show where in the Communicator 4.5 prefs this stuff is set. The first one shows how to make ALL outgoing messages into plain text, which I think is a great idea. The second shows how to customize the outgoing message encoding depending on whether Communicator knows that the recipient can receive the MIME stuff. One or both of these can be utilized to prevent the problem. I'm also noticing that for some messages, the entire message is encapsulated into some kind of attachment. I think it's caused for similar reasons.
On a Mac version of Netscape Communicator 4.5 Go to the "Menu" -> "Edit" Go to "Preferences" In the catagory "Mail & Newsgroups" there is a subcategory "Identity" Select "Identity" and deselect the box to the left of the choice "Attach my personal card to messages (as VCard). Close the "Preferences" window. The box on by default during install. Turn it off to remove the VCard to email attachments for this list. I presume the Windows and Unix versions of Communicator have the same preferences settings but haven't checked them personally as I have for the Mac.
