Posting to the List

Before you post, it's a good idea to be familiar with the guidelines of the list:

  1. List subscription info
  2. This list is NOT moderated! Every message that is sent to the list will be passed on to every member of the list (with a few small exceptions -- see below).
  3. This list is intended to be a quick-turnaround trouble shooting aid for those who administer and manage Macintosh systems as well as a place to exchange information on projects/tools/tips that would be of general interest to Macintosh Managers. Its primary purpose is to provide the Mac manager with a quick source of information for system management problems that are of a time-critical nature.
    • Try to include information about net or Web access in your post if appropriate. For instance, if you mention a piece of software that can be had for free or as shareware via the net, include a URL.

  4. If it is not specifically related to Macintosh management, then it does NOT belong on this list. Requests for vendor recommendations are tolerated, provided that the hardware/software in question is something that system managers normally purchase.
  5. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE...Think before you send a message! Ask yourself "is this really appropriate?" There are enough other newsgroups and mailing lists around to cover the marginal topics. Perhaps there is another forum that is more appropriate.
  6. Our list server software will not post messages containing the words "subscribe", "unsubscribe", or "help". Instead, it sends them to the list owner (on the premise that they are newbie posts) -- so don't use those words anywhere in your message! Substitute a * or something like that for one or more of the letters in those words if you find you must use them.
  7. People who do not have Web access may be forced to post questions to the list that might have been answered by other means. We have no desire to discourage the posting of such questions. However, it would be nice if people in that situation could mention that they can't use the Web page so that others don't roll their eyes at the appearance of an "old" question and simply delete it, or worse, flame the poster for not having used other resources.

  8. This one's really important:

  9. On answers:
    • Answers to questions are to be mailed back to the *questioner* and are NOT to be sent to the entire list.
    • The person who originally asked the question has the responsibility of summarizing the answers and sending the entire summary back to the list.
      • A summary should include attributions so others can pick up conversations offline if necessary with original posters. However, try not to simply dump all the replies into a mail message and send that to the list -- that is not really a summary!
      • When a summary is sent back to the list, it should contain the word "SUMMARY" as the first word of the "Subject" line.
      • Please try to briefly restate your original question so that others have some clue as to what it was you asked that generated all those replies!
      • IMPORTANT: File attachments to postings are not allowed!
      • How long to wait before posting your summary to the list

Man, I finally made it through that harangue!

OK, so you've made it through that forest of do's and don'ts, and with forearms bearing tiger and dragon brands, you step out into the snow ... um, no ... proceed to compose your question for the list.
